How To Change The Blade In A Cricut

Tackling how to employ describe in cricut pattern space forth with what the heck you can practise with it. From using writing fonts in cricut design space to separating a file into multiple colours and addressing envelopes with cricut pens.

Title image How to use the Cricut Draw Tool

Alexis and I are dorsum with some other Silhouette VS Cricut video (and weblog mail!) and this time… we're talking about the draw or write or sketch tool! In this series, Alexis from Persia Lou and I are comparison the Silhouette and the Cricut machines to give you lot insights into how they work, the blueprint software, and the unlike materials that they can cut. We're non so much talking about which is improve, only the different features and what they can practise.

So I'll outset off with some honesty- this isn't a characteristic from Cricut that I employ oft. I have used information technology a few times in projects I've created over the past few years but because how much I use my machine? It's pretty rarely used. Since I love my hand lettering– I don't apply it for things I think that it's most used for. Like addressing an envelope, or writing someones proper noun in a cute script. I'd rather just do that by hand. If you love using the pen tool, I'd love to hear what you create with it!

How to address envelopes with Cricut

In this video and blog post, I go through how to put together a print and cut file using a Cricut epitome and Cricut Writing Font, I cover how to letter on a surface that is not a cut file (ie. an envelope or pennant), how cutting files transfer to depict files, and how to dissever a file into multiple colours. Phew! It'south a large listing!

If you would rather lookout man it in video form… cheque it out! And while you're over there, I'd beloved if you subscribed :) I find information technology'southward easier to follow the process in video but if you'd rather read (I run across yous, in the lunchroom at work- ha!), I've got yous covered with the written post below.

What is the Cricut Depict Tool?

Cricut machines take ii clamps for tools- one for a blade style tool (Clamp B) and one for a pen style tool (Clench A). At least this is true for the 2 machines I've had (Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker)! You lot cannot put a blade in clamp A merely like you tin't put a pen in clamp B. Yous'll effigy this out pretty quickly if you are creating a projection that requires two pens and it tells y'all to load i at a time. Clench A also houses their older scoring tool which is the scoring tool needed for the Cricut Explore.

How to use more than 2 tools in one design with the Cricut Maker

The cricut draw tool uses the same mechanics of the cutting that y'all're used to- but with a marker. As the proper noun would suggest, it draws instead of cuts. In that location'due south some limitations on this simply it'due south pretty cool if you lot're looking to depict some things! I could meet this being groovy for scrapbookers, replacing lots of stamps with the wide variety of designs in Cricut Pattern Space.

How to Use Cricut to Cutting AND Draw

The get-go project I wanted to demonstrate for yous is how to employ multiple tools with your Cricut. In this project I used the fine point blade (the one that comes with your automobile), the scoring tool (adaptive tool for the Maker), and a fine indicate marker. I created this little envelope out of card stock. I love using double sided scrapbook paper for custom envelopes since y'all get the fancy wait of an envelope liner with but ane slice of paper.

This design is merely i I institute in Cricut Design Space and added the writing to. I sized my text to the envelope (you can resize the unabridged envelope and text after- keeping it all in line if you lot need to!) and chose a script font for the text. I chat in the video a bit more than nearly writing fonts and Cricut Design Space capabilities. I'm going to skip over that hither and chat about that in the adjacent department of this mail. Simply for the sake of this example- make sure to cull a writing font for your envelope. You lot tin can filter your search for this.

I as well chose to add a postage blueprint to the envelope. I used a cut file for this and just inverse the line blazon to draw. I talk more about that in some other section also but information technology just changes where the machine would have cut to a line that volition draw.

You will need to attach these layers together and then the writing draws ON the envelope. Cricut will automatically space all the pieces of a design out equally if information technology's cutting layers out of vinyl if you don't 'attach' them using the paperclip icon at the bottom of the layers panel. You tin resize this fastened blueprint as much as you lot demand before you hit 'Arrive'. I also turned off the envelope liner in this blueprint. You can turn on and off layers by hitting the eye icon in the layers panel.

When you hitting 'Brand it', you tin can move your design around on your mat if you need. Then, you lot'll be prompted to put in specific tools get-go. For this design, information technology told me to put in my pen and my scoring blade. When it was finished that portion of the project, the car paused and the software prompted me to put in the fine betoken blade. The machine never unloads to continue it all lined up.

Using the Cricut Draw Function with Fonts (writing fonts)

Okay so I said this in the video and I'll say it hither… I love Cricut and the software just the 1 thing I find limiting and I do observe frustrating? Fonts. On the plus side, you can cut any of your own fonts on the Cricut (woohoo!) and they have a huge library of fonts for yous to use in their software if you're not a font hoarder like I am.

Writing with Cricut- screen grab

But… the spacing! This kills me! The auto spaces the letters so that it tin can cutting them individually. Which, again, is peachy in theory… only so you'd need to place each letter of the alphabet individually on your design to get a great kerning dorsum. They do give you the power to adapt the spacing of your messages, but specifically with script fonts where the pb in needs to attach to the previous letter… it'southward obvious these aren't spaced out evenly, as adjusting the font spacing doesn't fully correct the effect. You can come across this very obviously as I play with fonts on my envelope design.

Which fonts can you use with the cricut draw tool

What fonts can yous utilize with the describe tool? Cricut has specific fonts called 'writing' fonts that are meant for the Cricut describe tool and typically are but i line thick per alphabetic character. Y'all can filter by them or you tin select the font yous dear and pick the 'draw' line type from the drop downward menu to run into what it translates like as a drawn font.

How to Accost Your Ain Envelope

Okay so after I made my own envelope and addressed information technology in the last project, I idea it was a good time to evidence how to use the writing tool on your own surface! I have washed this earlier in a Cricut VS Silhouette project. yous can see my 'Bee Kind' Wooden Pennant I drew on Correct Hither.

Bee Kind modern wood pennant

For this project, I used the aforementioned address template I'd fabricated in the last example. To edit any of the font, you need to detach the designs from i another (in the layer panel), edit your font or move things effectually, whatever you need, and then 'attach' information technology over again before cutting to proceed it lined up.

One time yous hitting go far, you tin can no longer size it simply y'all can move it around on your mat. You lot'll definitely want to practise this to brand sure it'southward lined up on your envelope. If you wanted to do lots of envelopes at one time, I'd advise using Cricut SnapMat to make sure that they're lined up well. I did a whoooole video and blog mail about SnapMat Correct HERE.

Do you need to select the right pen and paper in Cricut Design Space?

When you're cut using your Cricut, fabric pick is very important. Information technology's what makes sure your blade will cut through your material cleanly, and that it won't cut through your mat… or the backing of your fabric, or whatever y'all're trying to do.

How to use the Cricut Draw tool

When you're using the Cricut Draw function, though? I have found information technology actually doesn't matter… most of the fourth dimension. As long as you cull i of the preloaded pens that's the same size (ish) every bit the i that you want to use, you're good to get. The auto won't detect which color you put in at that place ;)

You besides can't select 'kraft envelope' so picking something like 'cardstock' works great. Just be aware that like any felt tip, using it on a super rough surface could fray the tip.

The drop down of pen options in Cricut Design Space also doesn't give you option for the washable fabric mark Cricut makes. If you wanted to mark on fabric, I'm chatting more than about that below, but simply cull a dissimilar marker and it should be fine.

Can you use a Cut File for the Describe Tool

The matter is, y'all can do whatever you want with Cricut. Just some things just await nicer and are easier. Ha! And so Yeah yous can totally use a Cricut cut file for draw. But information technology will just alter the cut lines to draw lines. Which is oft great if y'all take a layered cut file but I shared a couple examples in the video where you lot tin see… it's non that great. If yous take a thinner pattern that looks similar a describe design merely is a cut file? You're going to double up each of your lines.

How to use cricut cut and draw tool at the same time

You can use the 'profile' tool (lesser of the layer panel) to turn off some of those lines, just it might not terminate up looking how you'd similar (as in my example). I did do this for my 'Bee Kind' Pennant though and loved the look of simply the outline of the bee. Then it can work out… but information technology also can not. Yous'll have to play with your specific design to determine for yourself.

How to Separate a Cricut Design Into Different Colors

If you observe a design you lot honey in Cricut Design Space (or somewhere else!), you tin can definitely carve up it out to cutting or draw in unlike colours. This is the same process for a cut file that isn't already separated into layers every bit it is for a depict design.

How to separate one design into multiple colours with Cricut

The tool you're going to desire to get cozy with is the 'profile' tool, found at the lesser of the layers console. When you have your design selected, click 'contour' and you can choose which lines to ignore… or profile. You tin either select the lines individually in the sidepanel to erase or click on the lines in the preview window. I chose a design with the worlds nearly lines to demonstrate this with… JK simply actually it has So MANY lines. If you take this many, you might find information technology easier to select 'contour all' so simply turn back on the lines you want in a sure colour.

How to separate one design into multiple colours with Cricut

When y'all only have the lines you want in your first color turned on, hitting the x on the countour window and see the changes reflected on your canvas. Alter the color of the design to that first colour you would like it drawn in (or 1 that is like, retrieve it doesn't have to exist exact merely it will hep yous recollect which pen to put in when). Then, re-create and paste your design so you lot have two. Line them up perfectly, so hit contour and click your contours until you have simply the parts of the designs you lot'd like in your 2nd colour and so on. Practice this until y'all have all of your colours washed! You can encounter this being done in the video if yous like.

When you are happy with your blueprint, select all the layers of your design and click 'attach' to make certain they all draw together. And so click 'Brand it!'. If you forget to click 'attach' you will know because it will endeavour to depict it on several mats. When you are making information technology, information technology will tell you which pen to put in when, it volition practise this all without unloading the blueprint.

Using the Infusible Ink Pens + Washable Fabric Pen with Cricut Maker

Okay and then two other types of pens that Cricut makes that I have used (although didn't demonstrate for this video) are the Infusible Ink Pens and the Washable Textile Pen. The Washable Fabric Pen is used with well-nigh Cricut sewing patterns y'all can cut with the Maker. Information technology can exist used to mark the pattern right onto your fabric for you. Yous could besides throw it in the Maker to write instructions on material to take it washed out after. I could come across this existence great for gifts. It is not i of the available markers in the drib downwards card merely every bit I mentioned earlier, you really don't need to choose the verbal pen you're working with for it to piece of work.

Infusible Ink pens are meant to be used on laser re-create paper and and so that design on paper be transferred to an Infusible Ink blank. I haven't written whatsoever posts on Infusible Ink YET but it's coming! In the meantime, my friend Cori has such great tutorials for it- check this i out!

And as for OTHER pens? You can definitely employ non-cricut brand pens in the Cricut machines merely I couldn't observe any pens I owned that fit. However… Jennifer Maker has a very informative video near different pens to use right hither!

Phew! What a big post! I'one thousand going to exit it at that. If you accept whatever other questions about the Cricut Draw Tool, you tin can driblet them in the comments and I'll endeavor to get an answer to them!
